Fish help me be authentic.

Before I found my artist voice, I jumped around a lot, trying out different mediums, materials, and styles. 

I think that is true for most artists.

I would paint with intense color and pattern of fruits in fancy bowls on decorated cloths, after looking at paintings by Matisse…I would paint mysterious windows with light and shadows cast into an interior room because of my love of Edward Hoppers paintings and etchings…or I would paint figures with strong outlines or minimalist landscape after visiting a gallery,  loving the artist work, and thinking …this is what I should be doing.

All fun and all very much a learning experience, but never felt like my own.

When I started painting fish, something just clicked. It felt right and easy and real. I felt like my authentic self.
